That’s Interesting 10.06.21

From cookies designed to welcome alien visitors to Earth to pubic hair singing with pride, here are some things that made us say “That’s Interesting” in the studio this week.

So, we see limited edition packs that welcome the unexpected, sustainable material innovation featuring coconut waste, campaigns that break societal taboos and stereotypes, and new concepts that help us feel protected by promising portable air purity.

ET wants Oreos.

Have you ever thought what you would gift an alien if you ever met one? The folks at Nabisco have… Their latest limited edition pack for Oreos is called  “The Offering” and is inspired by sci-fi and recent discussions and developments around the possibility of extra-terrestrial life. An intergalactic, otherworldly Oreo cookie glows mysteriously on a black backdrop, with instructions to consumers on placing the pack and a cookie under darkened skies as a peace offering for our UFO-flying friends. Limited editions are the perfect platform to channel the zeitgeist and take your brand to unexpected, inspiring new places.

Coconut coolers material

Cool coconuts.

Philippines-based start-up Fortuna Cool saw an opportunity at the intersection of the challenges that coconut farmers face with the disposal of husks and the need to keep food cool to stop it from spoiling in warmer climates. Inspiration kicked in and the team found a way to tackle both issues with coolers made of waste coconut husks. These are turned into coconut styrofoam, a sustainable insulation material that is used to make these durable cool coolers. With the right resources and innovation mindset, waste can become a valuable material for people, planet and profit. For more examples of this, see our Earth Matters article, Winning with Waste.

Proud pube.

Pubes: unwanted; weird; gross; awkward. It’s a word and a part of the body that society is not comfortable with… But that’s exactly what Gillette Venus is challenging in their latest campaign. The delightful new video features an endearing, animated choir of pubic hairs singing with pride to fight the stigma of pubic hair and normalise people using the word pubic openly and comfortably, avoiding aliases such as bush and lady garden. At the end of the day, pubes are natural and common to us all, so there is no need to be shy. Say pubic loud and proud! Although Venus are best known for their hair (and pube) removal products, it is important for them to show they are keeping up with the times, spreading positive messages about accepting and taking care of your body in the way that suits you.

pure air concept

Pure air.

A breath of fresh air… Always much needed, especially in the city, when pollution levels can reach worrying levels. But sometimes and in certain locations this can be challenging. Not to worry though, because industrial designer Kevin Chiam has found the solution! Airtomo is a wearable air purifier that can be used in public transport to remove the air pollution from around the user by using water vapour. The colourful, portable device is inspired by biomimicry, and the way Nature uses rainwater to clean dirty air.  It’s still in its development stage but the latest prototype is working! For more on how design can be inspired by Nature, see our Earth Matters article, Mother Knows Best.
