That’s Interesting and Uplifting 16.07.2020

As we all try to adapt, cope, be safe and do our part to control and overcome the Covid-19 pandemic, it is important to find ways to stay motivated and positive. That is why, over the last few weeks, That’s Interesting has been focusing on initiatives and ideas that are uplifting and inspiring in these challenging times.

So, from a whisky in a paper bottle to Coronavirus-inspired Haute Couture, here are some things that made us say “That’s interesting, and uplifting!” in the studio this week.

Sustainable scotch.

Diageo has just announced that it will be releasing the world’s first 100% plastic-free, paper-based spirits bottle in early 2021. The limited edition of Johnnie Walker whisky will be made entirely from sustainably sourced wood, with a special inner coating that makes the material food safe without compromising its ability to be fully recyclable in standard waste streams. It’s an exciting step for the brand that opens up a whole new world of design codes and conventions for the category and pushes the boundaries of what sustainability looks and feels like.

Vision Racer.

Jaden Smith and New Balance have announced their first collaborative sneaker: the Vision Racer. The shoe’s design reflects the rapper and actor’s unique view on the world, with an aesthetic that is a mix of chunky and dreamy, futuristic and retro, and an overall concept that reflects the New Balance brand philosophy of fearless independence. Most importantly, the sneakers have been manufactured to reflect Smith’s strong belief in sustainability and history of vegetarianism and environmental activism: the materials used are vegan-friendly, recycled or sourced from repurposed waste.

Clear protection.

Whether it’s sharing a friendly smile with a passer-by, or trying to unlock your phone with Face ID, traditionally opaque paper or fabric face masks can pose a bit of a challenge to day-to-day life. Thankfully, a team of designers in the USA has come up with a smart solution: the Leaf mask is the world’s first FDA-registered, clear mask to have N99-standard air filtering abilities as well as a self-purifying feature, thanks to a built-in UV-C light. What with social distancing putting a real strain on human interactions, innovations like this are crucial to striking a balance between staying safe and feeling connected.

Corona Couture.

Viktor & Rolf’s Autumn/Winter 2020 Haute Couture collection has been designed to illustrate the spectrum of emotions that we experience as we react to and process the Coronavirus pandemic. The wardrobe – called Change – comes in three parts: in the first set, navy nightgowns, raincloud motifs and a spiky faux leather coat set a sombre tone punctuated by sadness and anger. The second set is about confusion and conflicted emotions, with an emoji-covered nightgown and deliberately awkward, unapproachable and asymmetric silhouettes. The collection ends on the more hopeful note of love, embellishing bathrobes and négligées with hearts, satin, glitter and embroidery.
