As we all try to adapt, cope, be safe and do our part to control and overcome the Covid-19 pandemic, it is important to find ways to stay motivated and positive. That is why, over the last few weeks, That’s Interesting has been focusing on initiatives and ideas that are uplifting and inspiring in these challenging times.
So, from wildfire trackers to wooden scooters, here are some things that made us say “That’s interesting, and uplifting!” in the studio this week.
The New London.
The time has come for this year’s London Design Festival! A great chance for creatives from all around the world and from different industries to come together in one city to present new, exciting design work. An issue that has become increasingly worrying over the last few years is climate change. This year is no different. Studio Weave – an architecture studio based in London – has chosen to imagine and capture how London is likely to change in the next years. They created a greenhouse pavilion which is filled with plants that they predict will be able to grow outdoors in London in the next couple of years due to temperatures rising. One side of the coin is that this is an exciting architectural piece; however, it also reminds us that it is our responsibility to protect the planet.

The woody way!
We can all agree that the latest must-have urban gadget is the electric scooter. But how much cooler can a scooter get? ILY-Ai is here to answer that question, zooming in with a new three-wheeled scooter made from chestnut wood. Forget the sleek, metallic scooter and embrace this new, warm and well-crafted one. Following the same functional principles as metal scooters, this sit-down version is designed to help its users travel in total comfort. It is also conceived to consider a broader user spectrum, including the elderly and those with mobility issues. A new, exciting, inclusive design, which we hope to see in action soon!

Every tree matters.
The news about the fires in California is more heart-breaking proof that the climate is changing and causing irreparable damage to nature. Scientists at Salo Science – a start up that looks at how technology can help us manage the climate crisis – have created a new platform to help out, called the California Forest Observatory. This new software that fire experts will be able to use, combines AI and satellite images to create a tree-by-tree, ultra detailed view of the forest. This will help them predict and prevent forest fires with greater accuracy, and is an inspiring example of putting powerful technology to good use.
